20-Something's Big City Almanac

I started this blog out of boredom. I then made a College Bucket List and I documented it here as I got closer to graduation. I have since graduated, finished said list and now am working in Los Angeles during my gap year. These are my rants, likes, dislikes and loves.

On TV Shows

Ever since both Lost and Heroes ended, I felt like my TV-watching experience has been lacking something. At the time, I didn’t really know what it was missing because I was covering a pretty broad spectrum with my TV shows: I got medical drama with House, stupid pointless drama with Grey’s Anatomy, period drama with Mad Men, comedy with Modern Family and Parks & Rec, sex with True Blood, low-brow humor with Family Guy and trash TV with Jersey Shore. Plus, you know, the occasional Real World episode and The Challenge (guilty!).

Anyways, I get really excited because with fall come new TV shows and honestly I haven’t sat down and watched a new TV show from its very beginning in YEARS. The newest shows I’ve been watching (MM, MF, P&R, TB), I only watched because others talked about how good they were so I didn’t get into them until after their first seasons. And as disappointed as I’ve been with past falls and their lack of good TV, this year seemed to be more promising and bring me some interesting shows. So, I sat down and watched The Playboy Club, Pan Am, New Girl, Terra Nova and American Horror Story. Sadly, the first was canceled after three episodes. I really liked it and though it fell short of what Mad Men has created, it was still pretty entertaining. Pan Am managed to hold my attention for a whole 20 minutes. Yawn. Another 60s shows falling short of Mad Men. New Girl is kind of awkwardly funny, but I only watch it when I’m caught up with all the other shows and I’m bored.

And this brings me to Terra Nova and American Horror Story. GREAT shows. Terra Nova has been on for about 3 weeks now and it’s excellent. It feels like I’m watching a movie every time and has kept me very intrigued as to what the hell is going on. Hopefully Earth really won’t be like that in 2145. And American Horror Story has had ONE episode air and Jesus Christ. Scared the shit out of me. It’s a CABLE show! Somehow it managed to mix drama, horror and sex very well. Needless to say, I am itching to see the next episode and has also kept me very intrigued as to what the hell is going on. Please watch both of these shows.

After watching these shows, I realized what my TV-watching experience was lacking. SUBSTANCE. A good, old TV show with a wicked story line. Something that could actively keep my attention and leave me wanting more. I remember how great the first season of Heroes was and how excited I was for Monday nights to roll around. Terra Nova and American Horror Story have made me excited to watch TV again, so much so that I might actually watch them at their intended times.

SIDE-NOTE: Game of Thrones and Walking Dead are also personal favs and can’t wait for the latter to start in 3 days! And I also need to catch up with The Borgias and Boardwalk Empire.
